What should I know if I want magnetic stripes on my cards?

Magnetic stripes are the dark strip of magnetic material seen on the back of discount gift cards, loyalty and membership cards, used in access control as key cards, ID cards, or as customer monitoring in combination with a Point-of-sale (POS) system.

Magnetic stripes make discount cards capable of storing data; they are also called swipe card or magstripe.

When magnetic stripes are encoded with a unique serial number, they become an effective tool to track customer’s purchasing activity. For example, when a customer purchases a gift card, which is swiped by the cashier to obtain the serial number stored on its magstripe, the cashier then inquires the customer how much money they would like to be “located” on the gift card. That amount is entered into the POS system by the cashier.

Data is usually stored on three separate tracks that each can hold a set number of characters. Each of the three tracks can be used for a different type of data.

Also you need to know that serial number formats can be random or sequential, so if you own a POS system, you need to consider which format is required by your POS system.

Types of Magnetic Stripes

There are two types of magnetic stripes, and the easiest way to identify the difference between them is the color of the stripe. LoCo magnetic stripes are brown, while HiCo magnetic stripes are almost black.

LoCo (low coercivity*) stripe cards are proposed to be temporary cards that can be easily written, erased and re-encoded, like hotel cards.

HiCo (high coercivity*) stripe cards last longer, and are generally not re-encoded or re-used. HiCo cards are best suited for applications where they are swiped frequently, such as debit cards. *Coercivity is the strength of the magnetic field of the stripe material used on the card.
